Business in a Briefcase – Instructor Bio

After graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management, Michael Manville got his first job overseas as an English teacher in Venezuela back in 1998.  Michael learned Spanish and dedicated the next 10 years of his life to creating his own business.

But not just any business, Michael designed a business he could carry with him – his very own Business In A Briefcase. Michael now teaches an international business course entitled Business In A Briefcase in an effort help others escape 9 – 5 and live a mobile lifestyle independent of the typical time or space restrictions.

Below is Michael’s story:

Finally one cold winter day early in 2003, I did it.

I resigned from my 9-5 job.

I had a vision of myself working on my lap top overlooking beautiful tropical scenery, and never having to make another commute to work during a cold, dark winter.

Fast forward to today. It’s 2010 and I live where I please, I travel wherever I want, I work whenever I want…

Not only that, I love what I do. I love waking up in the morning with total freedom and control over my day.

I spend my free time surfing in Panama, snorkeling with sea lions in Ecuador, or watching tango performances in Buenos Aires.

That's me in the Galapagos Islands!
That’s me in the Galapagos Islands!

I filled every page of my last passport and now I carry one that is twice as thick.

That's me near Sydney, Australia
That’s me near Sydney, Australia

Now I want you to learn from my experiences and that is why you are reading these words.

My business has enabled me to help hundreds, maybe thousands of people with their lives.

Freedom, money, job satisfaction… all combined with a healthy, balanced lifestyle. In other words, I’ve got it made.

But what happened in those six years that enabled me to donate my suits and ties to the Salvation Army in exchange for a pair of flip flops and a Panama Hat?

Only recently did it occur to me that I should take the time to write down how I did it, and make this information available to people like you.

How Did I Do It?

It wasn’t easy. I don’t believe in get rich quick schemes.

However, I do believe in playing hard and working smart.  I learned how to cut my work load down to part-time, while increasing my income beyond full-time.

Faith Is First

It took a lot of hard work to create my business, but more than work, it required faith. To be successful, I had to truly believe that I could find work I was passionate about and create fabulous wealth, with no boss, no office, and no suits or ties.

Dare To Dream

I had a vision of myself working leisurely on my balcony overlooking a tropical paradise and that is what I set out to accomplish. Eventually, that vision became reality, and it can for you too.

Let The Internet Set You Free

Although my business started with my fascination with the Internet, my business was not all about the Internet. The Internet is an exceptional business tool when used correctly. For me, it was the ticket that freed me from the chains of 9-5.

Old Business Meets New Technology

The fundamentals of my business model are based on one of the oldest styles of business around (no – it has nothing to do with pornography or prostitution). It’s just that the Internet speeds up and intensifies what used to be a much more time consuming and difficult process.

Who Will Succeed At A Web-Based Business?

Nearly anyone with enough passion can succeed.

Web-based businesses are perfect for fed-up corporate employees working 9-5, retirees looking to supplement their income, entrepreneurs, or anyone with a desire to experience a free-wheeling global lifestyle.

Easy Business

To really make a go of earning income abroad, your business needs to be easy.  The business model that I successfully developed for working abroad fits these categories:

- no advanced skills are required
- all you need is a computer and an internet connection
- low start-up costs with minimal overhead
- work from home in any country you want
- no employees, no office commute
- perfect for retirees, seasonal “snow birds”, entrepreneurs, backpackers, or anyone with a desire for a free-wheeling global lifestyle

Why Small, Web Based Businesses are Creating the New Rich

The New Rich are those who have taken advantage of the sweeping changes that have taken place over the last decade or so.  Working for large corporations no longer offers the security or job satisfaction it once did.  Meanwhile, the Internet and mobile technology has enabled some people to escape the rat race all together.

Key Principles Of My Unique Business Model

- niche oriented. Competition is limited and the power of the Internet is at its best when your business focuses on a very clearly defined niche.

- small is beautiful.
Not needing an office, employees, a fancy car, or any expensive equipment is a major advantage for any start-up business. If I would have had to rent an office or hire employees from the get go, I would have failed for sure.

- K-I-S-S. “Keep It Simple, Stupid” was a principle taught to me by a business professor long ago. It still rings true.

- work anywhere. Free yourself from the need to work from one place. The mobility element will greatly enhance your lifestyle and with today’s tools there is no reason not to free yourself.

- low risk. Keep your legal liabilities, insurance requirements, licensing requirements, and legal barriers to a minimum.

- key trends. The business should capitalize on key trends such as increased internet usage, aging baby-boomer retirement population, or the movement from industrial age to information age.

- enjoyable. You should be passionate about your niche and the work itself should be fun. It should not feel like work.

- community oriented. Opportunities to meet and interact with the people in the community where you live is an excellent lifestyle benefit.

- flexible.
You should work when you want, where you want.

- tax friendly. There are many tax advantages and tax write offs to owning your own web-based business.

- not a new idea.
It is not necessary to create a new idea. New technology and new communication styles can take a very traditional style business to a new level of success.

In The Four Hour Work Week, Timothy Ferriss puts it this way:

“Forget the old concept of retirement and the rest of the deferred-life
plan – there is no need to wait and every reason not to. Whether your
dream is escaping the rat race, experiencing high-end world travel,
earning a monthly five-figure income with zero management, or just living
more and working less, this book is the blueprint”.

I have to agree with Timothy.  There is no better time to move beyond 9-5 and become a member of the New Rich.

Now let me show you exactly how I did it.

What Others Are Saying about Business In A Briefcase

Michael,

I have taken many a business course and unfortunately most of them have been strictly academic. I was looking for a course that taught “hands-on” practical knowledge that I could put to use in the real world. Your “Business in a Briefcase” course is doing just that, offering real world help to get you going on your own.  Job well done.

Thanks

Richard
