Good News For Belize
While Mexico remains mired in a violent drug crime stand-off, the Caribbean country of Belize has remained stable and peaceful. And in today’s world of war, violence, natural disasters and social strife, this is good news for Belize. Keep reading to find out why Belize should be among your top picks for vacation, lifestyle, retirement and investment.
Belize is an ‘Anomaly’
Belize has always been somewhat of an anomaly in Central America. For starters, Belize is the only English-speaking country in Central America. The lack of a language barrier makes Belize easy for North Americans to adapt, to live, and to do business successfully.
Belize was originally a British colony, has no history of internal strife or war, is rarely affected by hurricanes, and offers a warm tropical climate amid crystal clear Caribbean waters.
No Island Fever!
Belize delivers the much sought-after Caribbean lifestyle without the hassle and confinement of living on an island. Goods and services are relatively easy to come by in Belize due to close proximity to Mexico and Guatemala.
Cost of Living
The cost of living in Belize is reasonable, and the style of living is eccentric and healthy. Belize is sparsely populated compared to neighbouring Mexico and Guatemala which makes for a more pristine and natural environmental setting.
Something For Everyone
The combination and timing for Belize spells opportunity for the adventure seeking expat, sun-seeking retiree, and entrepreneurs looking for unique business opportunities.
For the avid beachcomber or water sport enthusiast, Belize offers an incredible array of islands, coves, bays, coral and beaches. For the land lover, Belize is a diverse combination of jungles, waterfalls, lagoons, and rivers.
For the prospective business person or entrepreneur, Belize is relatively undeveloped, and under-represented as a location for global tourism. Belize also exhibits “emerging market” characteristics which opens a host of opportunities for new businesses. Belize has a long established offshore banking system that helps provide financial and economical stability to this otherwise agrarian economy.
For the retiree, Belize offers a laid back tropical environment with healthy food, affordable real estate, and close proximity to North America.
Flights from the U.S. are relatively short and affordable, yet Belize often goes unnoticed among the international travel and emerging market investment community.

“A great way to get a macro view of the region is to pay a visit, speak with the people living there, and see it for yourself. If you base your travel decisions on the CIA fact book, you probably won’t want to travel anywhere.”
Did I not dignify your last sentence with the last sentence of my post??
Your article is one sided it is not balanced either.
Belize is a nice place , However it suffers from intense crime in many areas – it is considered the murder capitol of the world depending on whose statistic one quotes,Check the CIA fact book and google crime in belize to get an overall macro view of what is going on in that region. Overall much due diligence will be required for any move to a foreign country
The CIA fact book does not provide a balanced perspective about any country. They basically post a bunch of warnings and only point to the negative aspects of any country. Having travelled all over the world, crime is usually only a problem in bad neighborhoods of major cities, or a result of putting oneself into a risky situation. Belize has only one major city (Belize City) and it is inland, far from any of the islands, beaches and other attractions in Belize. “Checking the CIA fact book and Googleing Belize” as the commenter suggests is not at all great way to get an “overall macro view of what is going on in the region” in my opinion. Obviously if you Google “crime” that’s what you’ll find. A great way to get a macro view of the region is to pay a visit, speak with the people living there, and see it for yourself. If one bases one’s travel decisions on the CIA fact book, one probably won’t want to travel anywhere.
Try San Pedro Scoop and tacogirl.com both excellent blogs done by American expats one happens to be an ex stockbroker who has lived there (Belize) for quite sometime. Both have an interesting boots on the ground perspective and would more than likely know the answers to your queries.
Best on your journey!
I have been researching life and moving to Belize in retirement for a while now…to retire in 2 years with husband. We have been teachers/community service workers and intend to volunteer such in Belize, if suitable living set-up can work out.
>>We live & work in Florida and I find flights out of Miami to Belize (or the land arrangements out of Cancun) to be difficult and flight costs seem high?
>>Are there decent colonial areas and where are they…”urban” is OK! Renovating a place is OK for us.
Please respond to our concerns above or route us to links of help.
Thanks!
